Titanium welding

Titanium is characterised by its positive attributes. With high specific strength and hardness yet low weight, it is practically made for lightweight applications. At the same time, titanium also boasts excellent resistance to corrosion. On the other hand, it comes at a relatively high price. Titanium is often used in the aerospace sector since high material costs can be quickly recouped thanks to its weight-saving advantages.

Titanium and all its different levels of alloy purity are basically easily weldable – including with lasers. However, it should be noted that titanium is a highly reactive material and requires an absolutely oxygen-free atmosphere for welding. If this requirement is not met, titanium oxide may form which leads to brittleness in the welded joint.
