Electrical sheets

Electric vehicles and other electrical systems require powerful and energy-saving electric motors. A key factor here is the use of magnetic materials, which transmit the magnetic field and thus the electromagnetic force in the electric motor. The magnetic cores used are made from stacked laminations of electrical sheet or electrical steel strip. For this purpose, corresponding segments are cut out of the strips.

The processing of the material contributes significantly to the behavior of the electrical steel used in the electric motor: In order to preserve the excellent magnetic material properties and thus the efficiency of energy generation or conversion, production-related damage must be minimized. Tight dimensional tolerances and the highest cut edge quality are also crucial.

  • Nickel-iron alloy (NiFe)
  • Silicon Iron Alloy (SiFe)

Because of its high flexibility, the laser has emerged as the preferred tool of choice for processing electrical steel. For example, there are no additional tooling costs and set-up times, allowing for short product changeover times. Other advantages of laser cutting include high processing speed, elimination of punching tool costs, and geometry freedom - opening completely new design possibilities for the designer when designing rotor and stator assemblies.

The most important point, however, is the favorable influence on the magnetic sheet characteristics with suitable laser and parameter selection. In contrast to alternative cutting processes, for example punching, only very minor structural changes occur at the cut edges during laser cutting.

Laser cutting is a technically suitable process for the economical, fast and precise cutting of electrical steel. Using the appropriate cutting gases, the precise laser beam guidance and the high-power density enable high-precision contour accuracies of ± 0.01 mm, exact, almost right-angled cut edges and clean cut surfaces. In this way, single lamellae with sharp corners, clean contour runs and high positional accuracy are quickly realized. Optimized laser cutting technology makes it possible to manufacture the laminations with virtually no burrs or distortion. The individual rotor or stator laminations can then be laser welded.
