Laser welding of battery cells

 

Lasers have proven to be an excellent welding tool in the e-mobility industry. All of the advantages of laser welding are on display in this promising sector. For example an operational battery consists of a large number of connections whose cells must be contacted during manufacture. Lasers can be used for all common types of cells such as cylindrical, pouch and prismatic cells. Minimal heat input, high process stability and a high degree of automation lead to reliable, low-cost joining.

Depending on the application, different process technologies can be used to laser weld battery cells – from high-performance disk lasers with fixed optics to single-mode fibre lasers with scanner optics and beam oscillation. Aluminium and copper welds are typical, as are hybrids with steel.
