Filter technology from BBW Lasertechnik

We develop and manufacture custom filters and sieves with precise laser-drilled holes – from the technical feasibility assessment and sample parts to series production. Defined opening sizes, reproducible hole patterns and high hole densities support reliable filtration – tailored to the medium, particle size, material and process conditions.

In brief

What are laser-drilled filters and micro sieves?

Laser-drilled filters and micro sieves are filter and sieve components whose openings are created without contact by a laser beam. Opening size, pitch and geometry are defined digitally and can be produced reproducibly – from sample part to series production. The values that can be achieved depend on the material, component geometry and quality requirements.

From laser-drilled filter to ready-to-install assembly

Laser drilling is our core service in the manufacture of filters and sieves. However, if your application requires more than a perforated component, we integrate additional steps around the filter or sieve into a coordinated process chain: from process development and laser-compatible design to mechanical machining, sheet metal processing and assembly.

On request, we therefore not only manufacture the laser-drilled component, but also take on coordinated machining, inspection and assembly steps through to the ready-to-install assembly. This reduces interfaces and coordination effort and creates end-to-end responsibility for process and quality.

To industrialise our own production, we develop suitable fixtures and automated manufacturing solutions where required.

When filtration has to be precise, robust and reproducible

In industrial filtration processes, opening size, hole pattern and open area determine how well a component separates, how evenly the flow passes through it and how long it lasts. As requirements for precision, hole density or geometry become more demanding, standard solutions and conventional processes often reach their limits.

If separation efficiency fluctuates (or is unclear), defined and reproducible opening geometries help. High pressure losses or uneven flow can be eliminated with an application-specific hole pattern and a suitable open area. Fine openings with a high number of holes require precise, digitally programmable machining – demanding media and short service lives call for a design suited to the material and geometry.

Whether it is a new development or a change of supplier: we support you from the feasibility assessment and sample parts through to scaling up to series production.

Precise filter structures through laser drilling

Laser drilling is a non-contact manufacturing process: the laser beam creates the openings without any mechanical tool contact. This means that hole patterns can be adapted flexibly and even large quantities can be produced with consistent quality.

Opening size, pitch and geometry are matched to the filtration task. Which machining strategy is used depends on the material, material thickness, opening size, required geometry and quality requirements – we carry out this assessment together with you before the first sample part is produced.

The precision laser drilling of filters is part of our services in laser processing.

FILTERS AND SIEVES

Filters and sieves to your requirements

We manufacture filter and sieve components as flat sheets, discs, tubes, cylinders or application-specific formed parts. Flat components and tubes can usually be produced particularly efficiently; for free-form surfaces, we assess clamping and machining concepts individually.

Precise filter structure for gas filtration

An industrial gas filtration application required a cylindrical filter insert with fine, reproducible openings. Wall thickness, hole pattern and the required dimensional accuracy had to be reconciled. BBW developed the machining strategy and produced the filter structure by laser drilling.

Laser-perforated sieve disc for process media

A custom sieve disc was required for a plant processing process media. A high number of holes and a uniform hole pattern were decisive. Following a technical assessment, samples were produced and the parameters were matched to the component geometry.

Custom perforated sheet for material processing

A processing application required a perforated sheet with a large number of precise openings. Number of holes, web width, material behaviour and component stability called for a carefully coordinated process design. BBW assessed feasibility, created the machining data and produced the perforation.

Technical capabilities for laser-drilled filters

The following information is intended as a guide. We assess the final design on the basis of the drawing, material, required opening, quality requirements and quantity.

FeatureGuide values
MaterialsStainless steel, steel and hardened steel, aluminium, copper, titanium and technical ceramics; other materials on request after assessment.
Material thicknessTypically up to approx. 5 mm, depending on geometry, opening and required taper. With USP (ultrashort pulse) lasers, we can process material thicknesses of up to approx. 2.5 mm.
Opening sizesTypically from approx. 150 µm. In thin foils – using USP lasers – from approx. 25 µm. Larger openings are produced depending on component and process.
TolerancesDown to the range of ±10 to ±20 µm, depending on material, material thickness, diameter and process. With USP lasers, we can achieve tolerances of ±5 µm.
Hole shapesRound and tapered by drilling; slots, square, hexagonal and free-form openings by cutting processes.

Technical values depend on the material, component geometry and quality requirements. We check feasibility on the basis of your drawing or a sample part.

The right process for your filtration task

For filters and sieves, we use different laser processes depending on the requirements. Single-pulse drilling is cost-effective for large numbers of holes in thinner components. Percussion drilling produces smaller diameters even in thicker materials and at higher aspect ratios. Trepanning drilling is suitable for larger openings, openings with particularly accurate shapes or deliberately tapered openings.

For particularly high precision requirements, we use micro drilling with ultrashort pulse (USP) lasers – for fine microstructures with a small heat-affected zone. Slots, special shapes or a smaller number of free-form openings are produced by precision laser cutting. We decide which process is suitable after a technical assessment of the material, material thickness, opening size and quality requirements.

Quality that is measured and documented

With filter components, it is not just the hole diameter and number of holes that count. Exit diameter, taper, roundness as well as the position and pitch of the openings can also be decisive for the function. We define the appropriate inspection strategy for each project and document the results. If required, it can also cover other quality-relevant characteristics of the machined or assembled module in addition to the laser-drilled filter structure.

Frequently asked questions about laser-drilled filters and sieves

We manufacture custom filter and sieve components, for example filter sheets, perforated sheets, discs, tubes and cylindrical components. Which geometry makes sense depends on your application, the medium and the required openings.

Depending on the requirements, we process stainless steel, steel, aluminium, copper, titanium and technical ceramics, among others. We assess the material, material thickness and quality requirements individually for each project.

In thin foils, openings from approx. 25 µm are possible. The achievable diameter depends in particular on the material, material thickness, geometry and required quality.

In addition to round and tapered holes, slots, square, hexagonal and free-form openings are possible – depending on the process. Pitch, arrangement and open area can also be adapted to the application.

Laser drilling is a non-contact process with no mechanical tool wear and offers great flexibility in terms of hole pattern and geometry. This can be decisive, particularly for fine openings, large numbers of holes or custom patterns.
