Manufacture of customized and robust battery modules for the defense industry

For applications in the security and defense industry, we manufacture customized battery modules for state-of-the-art battery systems and hybrid drives in military environments. The battery modules are housed in robust stainless steel enclosures and are designed and tested for use in extreme environmental conditions, such as very low temperatures.

Depending on the application scenario, the systems are consistently optimized for maximum stability and reliability for ground-based applications or for minimum weight combined with high structural integrity for flying objects. Our expertise in laser welding safety-critical components

As a specialized service provider, we successfully join various materials for the defense industry using state-of-the-art laser technology. We process materials specifically according to their functional requirements in the security and defense industry:

  • Stainless steel is used wherever maximum resistance is required.
  • Aluminum alloys enable significant weight savings in manned and unmanned aircraft.
  • Titanium alloys offer an optimal combination of weight efficiency and high mechanical stability.

Depending on the application, we achieve both high welding depths of over 8 mm and highly intricate components with very low welding depths of up to 0.3 mm.

The materials we process include: 

  • Martensitic chromium-nickel steels and classic stainless steels
  • Aluminum alloys of the 6000 series
  • Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V

Certification according to DIN 2303: Laser welding in the defense industry

Laser welding is particularly suitable for joining components in defense technology. Its advantages include precise energy input and excellent process stability.

Since defense technology products are subject to very high quality standards, contract manufacturers must provide proof of manufacturer qualification in accordance with DIN 2303.

Among other things, this requires a welding engineer who acts as a qualified welding supervisor. In addition, welding work may only be carried out by operators with valid equipment-related operator tests (according to DIN EN ISO 14732). The suitability of the production facilities is ensured by means of defined tests.

BBW Lasertechnik fulfills all of the above requirements as a contract manufacturer for the security and defense industry. We have manufacturer qualification for the “521 solid-state laser beam welding” process for high-alloy steels, aluminum materials, and titanium for flying and non-flying components (classes Q1, Q2, and Q4) of the highest safety class (BK1).
